Enjoy every sandwich

Warren Zevon and Ashley Morris

This Officially Unauthorized page will contain all I can find about Warren: discographies, bio stuff, sound snippets, (occasionally hidden) pictures, biased reviews, and so on. This sucker is constantly under construction, so enjoy, visit often, click all the links, look for easter eggs, sleep when you're dead, and enjoy every sandwich. Make mine a muffuletta.

Newest stuff

The best way I've seen to get Warren news, new articles, and updates is by the new Google News feature. The articles are sorted by date, from newest to oldest.

For complete WZ info, be sure to look at The Warren Zevon newsgroup, alt.music.zevon, the always current and informative Warren Zevon Other Page, the Warren Zevon Fan Page, which has a tons-o-pix, and Jaxer's web page, which has a plethora of MP3s, ranging from entire concerts to Dylan covers.

The Wind, Warren's newest album, is finished, and will be released August 25. Rolling Stone has more. VH1 will air the documentary they have been filming (with WZ's full cooperation) in conjunction with the release.

Here is Eric Olsen's review of the album, with sound snippets! There's also a nice old pic of WZ playing an old Dean Explorer copy.

Congrats Warren on becoming a Grandfather 2x over! Ariel, his daughter, gave birth to twin boys, Augustus Warren Zevon-Powell and Maximus Patrick Zevon-Powell, on Thursday, June 12. Glad you got to see this and the next James Bond film.

Transverse City, Sentimental Hygiene, and Wanted: Dead or Alive on CD, with bonus tracks on every album (such as an acoustic demo of Networking and leave my monkey alone in Spanish) have been re-released. There is nice repackaging and enhanced liner notes. Finally, the campaign against the weasels has yielded fruit! Now, if we could just get The Envoy and Stand in the Fire re-released...

While we're on the topic of re-releases, now's your chance to get that Lyme and Cybelle you've always wanted. Varese Vintage released Warren Zevon - the first sessions. Twelve tracks, 4 of them unreleased demos, several Lyme and Cybelle, and 2 tracks with Warren's replacement in L&C.

Jordan has some pictures of the latest recording sessions up at the official site, www.warrenzevon.com. Make sure to click on both the news and photos links.

Peter Gammons loves WZ. Don't believe me? Check out this link, where he leads off with lyrics from Seminole Bingo, or this column, where Julio Franco is named a Sacrificial Lamb, or here, where he talks about Phillie's manager Larry Bowa rubbing a pot roast all over his chest. Thanks for burning that image in my mind, Peter. I think that Gammons should be commissioner of MLB, but on November 19, 2001, Peter stated his choice: Warren Zevon for commissioner

Check out G. Brown's Denver Post article on WZ. No list of things to do there when you're dead.

Cleveland truly does rock. Check out Michael Heaton's Fractured Fairy Tale about abogados, armas y dinero, from the Cleveland Plain Dealer.

From Gregg Tubbs: In the recent Al Pacino film Simone, the character Simone is a totally artificial cyber actress/pop star, controlled by struggling director Pacino. Simone, who is never seen in public, embarks on a totally prefab concert our (she's seen as a hologram and a jumbotron image). Pacino slyly calls it "The Splendid Isolation Tour." Coincidence? With the cyber-theme of Transverse City, I think not! Good eye, Gregg.

The New York Times has an article in the January 26 copy of the Magazine called, ghoulishly enough, In his time of dying. If you don't have a free subscription to the Times, here's a text version.

Hey, let's all jump on the bandwagon! Elektra has a WZ page.

Finally...after years of teasing, we have Adrian Spidle's headrest, as autographed by Mr. Zevon! Pic 1, Pic 2, Pic 3, and Pic 4. The story: I went to a show in '87 w/ a guy who was a total autograph hound; he talked me into hanging outside the back of the theater until Warren left so we could get his autograph (this guy had a jeanjacket that he had been accumulating all kinds of autographs on). I didn't have any particular talisman to get signed off on, except the car itself, which happened to be in the same alley as the bus. The car certainly was an expression of my personality through to that point (and until its demise in 1990), so it was as good a thing as any to have Warren sign. Kenney Gradney, the bassplayer in that band (in between Little Feat incarnations I guess), signed my Red Sox schedule, too. Now that I think of it, I think I had Warren sign a different Red Sox schedule that I sent to my mom.

Check out Brian Shoop's Discography page.

If you want pix of WZ, another good way is through the Google Image Search.

The Philadelphia Weekly gives us this article on WZ. Thanks for the link, Matt. It has a few nice pix that you won't find anywhere else. In 1990, I had a girlfriend dump me while I was in recovery after being hit in a head-on collision with a hit-and-run drunk driver. In a similar vein, this gratuitous article with questionable timing tells how the repellant Anita Gevinson dumped Warren, her fiance, while he was in rehab.

Update to the Philadelphia Weekly article: They have published the letters to the editor that refer to said Zevon article, including one by Mr. Zevon himself.

Hunter S. Thompson is determined to mention Warren in every damn article he writes from now on for ESPN. Amen.

Newer stuffff

You can read a plethora of old WZ articles from the archives of the Rolling Stone. All the way back to the 70s. Of course, nothing between 1983 and 1999.

Warren had a rockin appearance October 30 on Late Night with David Letterman. Here's a snip of Dave interviewing Warren. Click on the Enjoy Every Sandwich link. BTW, Dave is about the coolest man alive for doing the show he did. Amen, brother Dave.

Courtesy of Zevon fan Jim Linekin, we have pix of Warren greeting fans who braved the elements to see him after the Letterman show. Enjoy, and thanks be to Jim.

TV Guide has an article about Warren's appearance on Dave. Nice, with a pic.

New Orleans' free weekly paper, the Gambit, has a nice article on Warren and his connection with Acadiana.

Jill Sobule has an MP3 cover of Sick that you can download for free. At the beginning, she talks about touring with and opening for Warren over the past couple-o-tours.

So we have confirmation that Warren is playing Knockin' on Heaven's Door on his next album.

Time Out New York has several articles about or referring to Warren. You can do a search there to find all of them, but here are a couple of good ones.

The Cleveland Plain Dealer is a newspaper worth reading. Here's another reason why.

The New York Observer has an article about WZ's appearance on Letterman with a few errors (Sleep When I Die?), but it is still informative.

The article in the Detroit Free Press is pretty good, but brief.

The Rolling Stone finally has something positive to say about someone besides nSync. A very good article in a magazine that has gone down the toilet in the past few years.

Check out the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette's farewell article. Post Gazette? That's almost as bad a name as Times-Picayune!

A Warren Zevon Tribute Concert is being held Dec 17th at Soho in Santa Barbara. Various artists will be performing WZ songs to salute one of the greatest songwriters of our generation. To quote McGarrett: Be there. Aloha.

Life and Death on the Late Show, an article from the American Prowler.

Blogcritics' articles on WZ. Follow the here, here, here links.

I, as always, claim fair use for this Dave Letterman interview with WZ.

Headline

Well, in case you've been under a rock, Warren announced on September 12 that he has terminal lung cancer that has spread to his liver. Here are some links from Rolling Stone, USA Today, Artemis Records, and the L.A. Times.

www.warrenzevon.com has stated: If you would like to send a message to Warren please send it to the following address: zevon@artemisrecords.com.

I don't know what to say. I put this WZ page up on the web as a labor of love. It was launched in December of 1994 to teach myself HTML, and to elighten others with the gospel of Warren. It worked. This was the first WZ page on the web, and it has migrated with me from Mississippi to New Orleans to Idaho to Chicago. I've not kept it up too much in the past couple of years, as Warren started his own website and others have had sites that have been updated more frequently. I have tried to keep the content level up and the signal to noise ratio high.

I think that Warren is as comfortable as one can be with his diagnosis, and I hope that he gets to spend his remaining time on this earth doing what he loves best with the people he loves most. Catch a tarpon for me, Warren.

Not new stuff that you should still look at.

The Warren Zevon Other Page Part 2.

Launch review that seems kind of poignant now, and a Guardian story.

Artemis Records has a page for Warren...as does Rolling Stone.

There is a nice interview with Warren in Salon magazine. A little more insight than the typical "What kind of guitar do you use on this song?" drivel.

Order Life'll Kill You from Amazon.com

Warren's JandR online chat from January 26, 2000

I tried to edit it to make it a bit more coherent and readable. Let me know what you think.

Finally here stuff:

Good news and bad news. I now have the Warren Zevon Trivia Challenge ready to go. However, since I do not have write permission to the cgi-bin file, the test is not automatically graded. The price you pay to have a free provider... So you're on the honor system. If you make below 60%, e-mail Warren and tell him you like Randy Newman better.

Old stuff:

Every now and then, TNN broadcasts a show called "The Life and Times of the Everly Brothers". You can see several nice interview clips of Warren and Waddy, discussing their early life experiences with Don and Phil.

Rob from New Zealand sent me this nice table of catalog numbers.

Wanted Dead or Alive is now out on CD by One Way records. Just go to your nearest record store and tell them to order it.

Here's a fun conversation I had with Virgin UK regarding the availability of Transverse City Now updated with more weasel behavior!!!.

On the Albums page, I now have links to Carl Hiaasen pages, and added some things to the album descriptions.

Warren has a cameo at the end of "She's Having a Baby," when they are suggesting baby names. It's only a second or two. The film is amusing in other ways and might be worth a rental.

Warren said he's finally finished a symphony. Or to quote him, "More like a symphonette."

Albums, Pics, and Sounds

This is where you can find tons of stuff about his albums. Cover art, song lists, call numbers, biased reviews, and more! Now on a separate page for the bandwidth impaired.

If you are an individual, Feel free to link to this page. This page created by Ashley Morris. I don't get paid for this, I do it because Warren deserves a home page more than about any songwriter I can name. Please e-mail and let me know if some links are out of date, or if you have some WZ news. I get a ton of WZ mail and can't respond to all of it. Thanks for understanding. Hell, I got e-mail from Warren himself, and didn't reply for 8 weeks. All lyrics, images, and sound snippets are owned exclusively by Warren Zevon, and I'm just a purveyor of information. Other than that, this page is © 1994-2003 by Prof. Ashley Morris, Ph.D. Nyyyaaahhh.
